Requirements & Design Analysis
← Previous: Sprint Test Planning | Back to Testing Workflow | Next: Test Design →
This stage begins when initial product documentation, wireframes, or UI/UX designs become available. The objective of this phase is to review the provided materials, identify inconsistencies, and prepare the foundation for test design.
QA engineers analyze the available documentation and design artifacts to ensure that requirements are clear, consistent, and testable before implementation begins.
Objectives
- Review and validate product requirements and specifications
- Analyze UI/UX designs and user flows
- Identify inconsistencies and unclear requirements
- Prepare clarification questions for stakeholders
- Generate preliminary test scenarios

During this phase QA performs the following activities:
Documentation Review - reviewing product requirements, specifications, and available documentation - analyzing functional and non-functional requirements - identifying ambiguities or missing information - validating completeness of requirements
Design Analysis - analyzing UI/UX designs, wireframes, and user flows - reviewing design specifications and interaction patterns - evaluating user journeys and navigation flows - identifying potential usability considerations
Inconsistency Identification - identifying inconsistencies between documentation and design - flagging conflicting requirements or specifications - documenting gaps in provided materials - highlighting missing acceptance criteria
Clarification Questions - preparing a list of clarification questions for product owners, designers, or stakeholders - documenting unclear requirements requiring additional information - identifying edge cases needing clarification - flagging potential technical constraints or risks
Preliminary Test Scenario Creation - creating a preliminary list of potential test scenarios and test cases based on available materials - identifying key functionality requiring validation - outlining critical user workflows and paths - documenting initial test coverage considerations
Where appropriate, AI-assisted analysis may be used to support documentation review, identify inconsistencies, or help generate initial testing scenarios.
Deliverables
Inconsistency Report – Document highlighting inconsistencies found in requirements and design. A template will be provided.
Clarification Questions List – Structured list of questions requiring stakeholder input. A template will be provided.
Preliminary Test Scenarios – Initial draft of potential test scenarios and cases. A template will be provided.
Collaboration
During this phase, QA collaborates with:
- Product Owners – to clarify business requirements and priorities
- Designers – to understand design intentions and user experience goals
- Developers – to discuss technical feasibility and implementation approach
- Business Analysts – to validate business logic and workflows
Outcome
The outcome of this phase typically includes:
- identified inconsistencies in documentation or design
- a structured list of clarification questions
- a preliminary set of test scenarios and potential test cases
- improved understanding of system behavior and expected functionality
- foundation for detailed test design activities
Quality Gates
- All requirements and design artifacts are reviewed and approved by QA
- No critical ambiguities or inconsistencies remain
- All clarification questions are addressed and documented
- Requirements are clear, complete, and testable
- Preliminary test scenarios are created and traceable to requirements
